Initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions in logistics

picturepicturepicture

As logistics companies are increasingly required to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cargo transportation and pursue environmentally-friendly transportation, modal shift initiatives are drawing attention.

Modal shift refers to shifting from depending on trucks for cargo transport to energy-conserving mass transport with lower pollution, rail and ocean transport. Combining truck transport with these other modes makes it possible to increase transport efficiency and cut logistics costs while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions.

Our motto is "through high-quality services by valuing the well-being of both people and the environment". Hitachi Transport System began focusing on modal shift from early on, in order to reconsider the existing truck-oriented transport. We are currently taking initiatives to increase efficiency, cut costs, and reduce transport-induced CO2 emissions.

The three main modal shifts implemented by Hitachi Transport System include medium-range transport ("medium-range modal shift"), transportation conducted in cooperation with export companies ("medium-range shuttle modal shift"), and long-range transport ("long-range modal shift").

For the medium-range modal shift, we have been able to reduce costs and carbon dioxide emissions by splitting daily transport loads between rail and trailer transport.

In addition, we considered whether we could somehow reduce unnecessary transportation of empty containers after unloading. By cooperating with export companies, we have been successful in utilizing these empty containers effectively, while simultaneously reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Further, as part of our long-range modal shift we implemented racks that allow us to transport railway containers on trailers equipped to carry sea containers. This has allowed us to increase the number of containers that can be transported at once while optimizing the use of sea container trailers, to simultaneously cut costs and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

These modal shift initiatives not only help maximize transport efficiency, but also contribute to reducing our environment load.
